Denver, Colorado

Denver BoundariesThe City and County of Denver is Colorado’s state capital. With a population of over 634,000  Denver is the largest city in Colorado and the 23rd largest city in the United States. Denver is one of the few cities in history not built on a road, railroad, lake, navigable river or large body of water. It sprung up at the confluence of the South Platte River and Cherry Creek  because this was where the first few flakes of gold were found in 1858. Yet despite this unusual beginning, Denver is now a major transportation and distribution hub for the Rocky Mountains and western United States, connected by Interstates highways, railroads and an international airport. Denver International Airport is the 5th busiest airport in the world.

Denver’s neighborhoods vary significantly from each other. Generally, the neighborhoods closest to the city center are denser, older and contain more brick buildings. Most neighborhoods away from the city center were developed after World War II and are built with more modern materials and styles. Neighborhoods even farther from the city center have suburban characteristics. Denver has enjoyed an opportunity to redevelop some very large parcels, including the former airport, a former air force base, and the railroad yards next to the Platte River, giving Denver some exciting new architecture and new population growth. Most Denver neighborhoods contain parks or other features that are the focal point of the neighborhood. In addition to its 200 parks, Denver is crossed by three outstanding recreational trails –  the Highline Canal, the Cherry Creek and South Platte River Trail.

The City and County of Denver lies within the boundaries of the Denver Public Schools. A  few neighborhoods with Denver mailing addresses are not within Denver County, but are in unincorporated Arapahoe County. Those neighborhoods are served by the Cherry Creek School District.
